If you want to make sure a file you receive is legit and it doesn't contain anything suspicious, you can check it at a basic level with DeadHash. This lightweight application can be used to calculate a file's has values. It supports a large number of hashes, including MD5, SHA-1, SHA-256 and CRC32. Also, the application comes with a few other built-in tools, to help you even further with verifying files.

DeadHash is offered as a freeware application and it is compatible with all popular Windows versions. Its installation file is quite small, so downloading the kit and installing its components should take only a few seconds, even on older machines.

Importing one or more files, on the application's compact user interface, is all you have to do. Imported files are listed on the left side of the window and you can find the hashes for selected files in the larger area on the right. As previously mentioned, you can find various hashes, like MD5, SHA-1, SHA-256, CRC32 and others.

The application provides you with a few miscellaneous tools, which can be accessed through one of the top menus. You can find a file and text comparison tools, a text hasher and a folder monitor. Just like the application's main function, these tools are straightforward and easy to use. You only need to load your files or text and your results will appear in no time. Exporting the hash information, in text or HTML format, is another possibility.

Retrieving the hash information for any number of files can be done with only a few when using DeadHash.

Pros

The application supports various hashes, including MD5, SHA-1, SHA-256 and CRC32. The application is straightforward and easy to use. It is free and you can have it up and running in no time.

Cons

There are no obvious issues to address.
